“Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life.” Job 33:29-30 Job’s three friends have been trying to convince him that his troubles are caused by his sin. They are convinced that if he would only repent and confess his sin, God would heal him. But Job knows he has no sin in his life that he hasn’t already confessed and for which he hasn’t already been forgiven. He wonders out loud why God doesn’t speak to him and answer his questions. He’s frustrated and bewildered by what seems to be God’s silence. Then Elihu, who has been sitting by and listening to the others speak for 30 chapters, speaks up. He points out that God is speaking all the time, but we don’t listen! God is constantly working in our lives to draw us closer to Him. He speaks in our hearts even while we sleep. He brings circumstances and experiences into our lives to teach us His ways, but we don’t get it. Some of these experiences are joyous, some may be painful, but God is working in all of them to turn our eyes to Him and enlighten our hearts. Thank God for His Word, where He speaks most clearly. He opens our ears by His Holy Spirit as we read and gives us understanding. Life begins to make sense as we listen with believing hearts and let His Word grow roots and bear fruit in our soul. Father, Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. The way You reveal yourself to me here is clear and bright but even here, because of the hardness of my heart I still need your Holy Spirit to open my eyes and ears with understanding. Lord, give me a heart to respond to Your Word, so that I can hear and understand whenever and wherever You speak to me, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Pastor Dan Giles
