"And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel."
Deuteronomy 17:18-20
The rulers of a godly nation are to rule according to God’s Word. They are not to be led by human wisdom and counsel when it contradicts the Word of God. The ruler himself should be thoroughly familiar with the Bible so that when he is given advice that is contrary to it he will be able to discern that and reject the ungodly counsel.
This principle applies to any position of leadership, not just to national rulers. When I told my Dad I was thinking of going to Seminary his advice was, “The best way to prepare for Seminary is to fill your mind and heart with God’s Word, now. Read the Bible every day, before you get there and while you’re studying. Then, if your professors teach anything contrary to it, you’ll be able to recognize and reject the false teaching.”
Whether you’re the manager of a business, the head of a family, the leader of a club, or the administrator of a school, no matter what role of leadership you may find thrust upon you, the spiritual discernment and clear wisdom found in God’s Word will enable you to be a godly leader, capable of taking your society God’s way.
Fill your heart and mind with God’s Words. Learn to think God’s thoughts after Him. Read, study, memorize, meditate on and talk about the Bible. It’s a lamp for your feet and a light on your path. A true leader leads people in the right direction.
Lord, You have given me Your Word, made it available to me and promised to teach it to me. Forgive my lack of humble appreciation for Your indescribable gift. Give me a heart that loves Your Word and feeds on it. Fill my heart and mind with the wisdom I need to make life-altering decisions today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
